Exploring Innovations in Adult General Education and Vocational Training: Highlights from the Anglophone Community Expo 2024 Conference

In the landscape of adult general education and vocational training, staying abreast of innovative practices and technological advancements is key to empowering learners and facilitating meaningful engagement. The Anglophone Community Expo (ACE) 2024 Conference recently brought together educators, consultants, and administrators to delve into various trends and strategies shaping the field.
Themed around “Experiment, Elevate, & Engage,” ACE3 aimed to inspire attendees to explore new approaches, elevate their teaching practices, and foster deeper engagement with learners. Kicking off the half-day event was the renowned TV personality and educator, Eramelinda Boquer, whose infectious passion for teaching and communication set the stage for an enriching experience.

The event was held on a Gather.Town platform, “a video chat platform designed to make virtual interactions more human”, in an 80’s video game aesthetic. It allowed for one of the distinctive features of ACE3 : the diverse array of virtual Conversation Hubs, each focused on a specific topic relevant to adult education and/or vocational training. From digital literacy to fostering a sense of belonging, participants engaged in spirited discussions led by experts in their respective fields. Here are some highlights from the event:
Keynote Speaker
Eramelinda Boquer, a seasoned broadcast media professional and community advocate, shared her insights on the importance of experimentation, elevation, and engagement in education. Her keynote address set a tone of enthusiasm and curiosity, encouraging attendees to embrace innovation in their teaching practices. “As both a reporter and a content specialist I see the incredible benefits of these educational formats and conversely, the deficits when they are not more easily accessible or not supported to the fullest extent,” she said.
ABC Connect for Learning
Ellie Tamura and Savanna Busia from ABC Life Literacy Canada introduced attendees to free resources aimed at enhancing digital literacy skills. Their session provided valuable insights into incorporating these resources into local education plans, empowering facilitators to better support learners in the digital age.
Digital Choice Boards – Empowering Students
Chris Colley and Carolyn Buteau from LEARN/RECIT Consultants showcased the power of choice boards in fostering student agency and engagement. Through practical examples across various curriculum areas, attendees gained valuable strategies for creating dynamic and personalised learning experiences.
Belonging and Student Engagement
Micheline Ammar and Julie Robitaille emphasised the importance of creating inclusive learning environments where every student feels valued and connected. Their session explored practical approaches for fostering a sense of belonging, ultimately empowering learners to take ownership of their educational journey.
Computer Supported Collaborative Learning
Nancy Zerabny, a seasoned educator and technology expert, delved into the effective use of collaborative learning tools such as Articulate Storyline. Attendees gained insights into creating interactive online modules that promote group collaboration and enhance learning outcomes.
Pocket-size Professional Development
Robin Long, the PROCEDE VT Consultant, shared valuable tips and tools for professional development tailored to the needs of vocational teachers. From ice-breakers to co-created lesson plans, attendees discovered practical strategies for enhancing their teaching practices on the go.
Complementary Educational Services
Lucie Tremblay, an Orthopédagogue, shed light on the range of educational services available to adult learners across Quebec. Her session highlighted the importance of personalised support in facilitating learner success and attainment of educational goals.
Chit Chat Zone Lounge: Engaging Conversations
In the relaxed atmosphere of the Chit Chat Zone Lounge, attendees had the opportunity to engage in open and free-form discussions on topics of personal and professional interest. From serious debates to lighthearted conversations, the lounge provided a space for meaningful interaction and networking.
RÉCIT AGE & VT: Supporting Professional Development
Consultants from RÉCIT AGE and VT offered valuable insights into how their services can support the professional development needs of educators. Attendees had the chance to engage directly with consultants, discussing specific challenges and exploring potential solutions.
